David Wells to Join MACP for First Recording
David A. Wells teaches bassoon at California State University, Sacramento. He attended Arizona State University and Florida State University before going on to earn the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Wells is Principal Bassoonist of the Sacramento Choral Society & Orchestra, the Townsend Opera, and the Merced Symphony, and freelances throughout northern California. He also plays bassoon, clarinet, and saxophone in the swing quintet Hot Club Faux Gitane. His past performance activities have varied widely, from renaissance and baroque music on period instruments to avant-garde chamber music on electric bassoon. He has taught at the Festival de Musica de Santa Catarina in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil as well as at the Sequoia and CalCap Chamber Music Workshops in Northern California. He also serves as the Director of Operations for the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and Bassoon Symposium, a biennial competition for young women bassoonists. Wells holds an MA in Musicology from UW-Madison and is an active music scholar. He has contributed articles to The Grove Dictionary of American Music, written CD liner notes for fellow bassoonists, and has given papers at the conferences of the American Musicological Society and International Double Reed Society.
